After announcing plans in September, Urban Capital Property Group and Rogers Real Estate Development Limited are now taking registrations for M City, an upcoming master planned community in downtown Mississauga. The ambitious 15 acre, 4.3 million square foot project will consist of 10 towers and two acres of public parkland.
The plot of land where the project will be built was part of the 43 hectares of property purchased by Ted Rogers in the 1960s to build transmitters for one of his first business ventures, radio station CHFI. In the early 1990s, the transmitters were relocated when Rogers sold much of the land to builders to develop new subdivisions. In 2002, the current site of M City was re-zoned to allow for residential development and in 2007, Rogers enlisted Toronto-based Urban Capital Property Group to manage the process of transforming the site into a legacy community, marking the communication company’s first foray in condominium development.
“Rogers has an enduring history with the City of Mississauga,” said Edward Rogers, Deputy Chairman of Rogers Communications and son of Ted Rogers. “With the help of Urban Capital and our development team, we aim to contribute to the evolution of Mississauga’s downtown. M City will be anchored by iconic design, it will prioritize public spaces and parkland, and it will offer residents the best technology available now and into the future.”
The thoughtfully-designed master plan will see existing city streets extended into the community and aligned in an angular plane to create a pedestrian-friendly network of blocks. Each block will provide two-way roads with on-street parking, sidewalks and residential frontages.
“We took our time to make sure we got every last detail right,” said Mark Reeve, Partner at Urban Capital Property Group. “Downtown Mississauga is undergoing intense urbanization. Its citizens are young and ambitious and represent a diverse, urban culture. That is why Rogers chose the name M City. They wanted the project to reflect their enthusiasm for downtown. It’s an enthusiasm that we share.”
The first tower — scheduled to launch in early 2017 — was designed by CORE Architects with interiors by the renowned design firm, Cecconi Simone. When completed, the 51-storey tower will redefine Mississauga’s skyline with its striking, undulating design that rotates seven floor plates towards its top height.
“CORE’s design is a stunning addition to Mississauga’s skyline,” said Reeve. “Not only does it dialogue with celebrated architecture on the eastern end of downtown, but just as important is the way it interacts with the immediate streetscape.”
Situated at Burnhamthorpe Road and Confederation Parkway, residents of the community will be steps from a wealth of local amenities. It is within walking distance of Square One Shopping Centre, Sheridan College, Mississauga Celebration Square and the Mississauga Central Public Library. The area is also well connected with easy access to MiWay Transit, GO Transit, Highway 403 and the QEW.
