The Canadian population hit a new demographic milestone last year as the population of people 65 and older exceeded the number of children under 15 for the first time in history. With an aging population, developers are beginning to introduce new residential communities that cater to the changing needs of the older demographics.
“The Canadian economy is getting hit with a tsunami of people entering the 55 and over age bracket, said Kern Kalideen,” Executive Pastor at Global Kingdom Ministries. “As we age, our physical, social, economic and spiritual needs change, so we want to be able to meet that increasingly large section of the population.”
Kalideen is also the CEO of Trinity Ravine Towers, a brand new 55-plus Christian lifestyle community coming soon to 1250 Markham Road in Scarborough. Sponsored by Global Kingdom Ministries, the two tower development is one of city’s first adult lifestyle community geared to evolve with the needs of its residents.
BuzzBuzzHome News dropped by the new presentation centre and model suite last week to find out more about the project.
“For many years, there has not been any significant development that meets the needs of seniors in Scarborough,” said Kalideen. “Local residents end up having to go out of the city to Aurora, Georgetown, Oshawa or Newmarket.”
With Trinity Ravine Towers, local residents can “age in place,” staying in the same neighbourhood where they’ve built deep roots and live a maintenance free lifestyle without having to change doctors, dentists or even grocery stores. In addition to typical condominium-style amenities including a fitness centre, concierge and games room, the project will also have an on-site Wellness Centre staffed with nurses, doctors and physiotherapists.
“It’s a great concept because we will be able to provide them with some assisted care within their own suites and they won’t have to move every time their physical needs change,” explained Melanie Burton, Director of Sales. “Down the road our vision is to have a nursing care facility with 24 hour care so residents can easily be transferred without having to go through a government run assessment system.”
Located directly across from the Global Kingdom Ministries church and community centre, Trinity Ravine Towers also offers a wealth of opportunities for community involvement. From lectures and movies to crafts, workshops and day trips, the development provides activities for all to enjoy. And, while there’s no obligation to be active members of the church, residents can volunteer for church activities including community outreach programs, youth mentoring or the organization’s soup kitchen where 750 meals are served each week.
Another unique feature of the project is the use of Life Leases where residents purchase a life lease interest in the project, at market value and have exclusive use of their suite and all the common areas and facilities. The benefit of this model is that projects can be controlled by a non-profit or charitable organization such as Global Kingdom Ministries, to ensure an age-exclusive mature adult community. A more social lifestyle is also promoted through extensive amenity areas promoting a greater interaction. Plus, since it’s not a conventional home purchase, residents are exempt from the land transfer tax.
Designed by Reinders + Rieder Ltd the community will feature a 25- and 35-storey tower connected by a four-storey central podium. Characterized by a light stone facade and large picturesque windows, the two towers will introduce modern design and classical elegance to the Markham Road streetscape.
Inside, residents are greeted with a spacious and welcoming lobby by renowned interior designer Johnson Chou. The elegant space boasts a living green-wall, indoor waterfall, and plenty of seating.
Echoing the elegance of the lobby, the suites at Trinity Ravine Towers are well-appointed with nine to ten foot ceilings, extra wide door frames, wood-laminate floors in main living areas and porcelain tile in bathrooms. In the kitchen, you’ll find quartz countertops and tile backsplashes, custom cabinets, and a full appliance package with built-in dishwasher, 18-cubic foot refrigerator with top-mounted freezer, 30 inch self-clean electric range, and an integrated microwave range hood.
